In Turkey, belly dancing is a standard form of entertainment. Usually you will find belly dancing in night clubs or other such places. But often belly dancers are hired to perform at weddings and parties.

Belly dancing is a traditional in Turkey. But more than that, it attracts tourists from around the world. To Turkish people the dance is an art form that is enjoyed by all age groups.

In Turkey, belly dancing goes by the name Gobek dans. It has progressed through the ages to what we presently see as belly dancing. Many believe that belly dancing can trace its origins to Greece while many others point to Egypt as the country of origin.

Belly Dancing In Night Clubs

Many women earn money by belly dancing in Turkey. It is in many ways similar to a strip club in America. The men will stuff money into the costumes of the dancers while they watch them perform their dance. At times men will perform belly dancing, many times hopping up on the stage and dancing along with the belly dancers. This is a common occurance at parties and festivals.

Belly Dancing Is Known Around The World

There are a variety of accessories available for belly dancing. There are costumes, videos, jewelry and music available from many sources on the Internet. This unique dance has become known around the world as its own dance style. This kind of dance is very different from other dance styles because it displays its history and heritage. Belly dancing has some very interesting connotations that involve both religion and eroticism. Many people have their own opinions about belly dancing. Some view it as a terrible form of art, while others absolutely love it.

The Music Of Belly Dance

The typical belly dancer in Turkey is usually a woman who is quite shapely. The muscles of her abdomen are extremely well trained and able to perform amazing feats. The typical Turkish belly dancing music consists of bells and clanging sounds. A rhythm is generally played in the background to accompany the belly dancer. The music follows along with the intricate hip movements. Generally this dance is performed bare footed.

The Movements of Belly Dance

The body’s rhythm is the main focus of the belly dance. The belly dancer performs a complex set of movements that give the illusion of flowing and sensuality. The torso is the main area of movement in belly dancing.

Sometimes props are used during belly dancing. In Turkey many times a woman will dance with snakes and swords. Other times the woman will use swords and veils. These are very popular folk dances. Typically these props are seen as mystical items. The snake for example has been associated with symbols of male and female and also immortality.
